Airports in the United Kingdom

London is served by six airports. Heathrow, with a record 84.5 million passengers in 2025, is 17 miles from the centre; Gatwick, with 42.8 million, is 31 miles south. Stansted counted 29.76 million passengers and Luton 17.77 million, London City Airport 3.74 million and Southend 0.72 million. Only Heathrow and London City are inside Greater London.

Outside the capital, Manchester Airport is the largest, with 32.07 million passengers in 2025. Edinburgh followed with 16.97 million, Birmingham with 13.66 million, Bristol with 10.83 million and Glasgow with 8.21 million. Liverpool John Lennon, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Aberdeen and Southampton complete the list of airports served.

Arrivals and Departures

Each airport has its own layout. Heathrow works with four terminals, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and does not allow pick-ups on the terminal forecourts; collections take place from the terminal car parks. Gatwick has a North and a South Terminal, Manchester Airport has two terminals, 2 and 3, and Stansted and Luton each have a single terminal.

Book with your flight number. Your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pick-up to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur; the exact spot follows the airport's own pick-up rules. For the flight out, you set the pick-up time yourself, and the confirmation shows it. The Terminals 2 and 3 station at Heathrow has been shut since 25 June 2026, but a car goes straight to the terminal on your ticket.

From the Airport to Cities, Ports and Day Trips

Many airport transfers end outside the nearest city. From Heathrow, Windsor is 10 miles, 30–40 minutes, and Oxford 50 miles, 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Southampton, with its cruise terminals, is 67 miles from Heathrow, 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes. Brighton is 27 miles from Gatwick, 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, and Cambridge 30 miles from Stansted, 1 hour to 1 hour 25 minutes.

The chauffeur who meets you drives the whole way, with no change of vehicle on the road. Before you fly, check whether your nationality needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); British and Irish citizens do not. In the booking form you can enter a cruise terminal as the place where you are picked up or dropped off.

Groups, Luggage and Events

Groups travel with more than suitcases. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 passengers with their luggage. Coaches come in several sizes with up to 56 seats, and the luggage travels in the hold. The vehicle is matched to the load, so list golf bags, instrument cases and exhibition boxes when you book. If a group arrives on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own.

The busiest airport weeks follow the event calendar: the London Marathon on 24 and 25 April 2027, Royal Ascot on 15–19 June, Wimbledon from 28 June and the Edinburgh Fringe from 6 August. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early for those dates. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your airport transfer with Bookinglane.

Which are the main airports in the United Kingdom?

Heathrow, with a record 84.5 million passengers in 2025, then Gatwick with 42.8 million and Manchester Airport with 32.07 million. Stansted, Luton and Edinburgh follow, and London City, Southend and Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow complete the main list.

How far is Gatwick from central London?

About 31 miles south of the centre; allow 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes by car. Heathrow is 17 miles, 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, and London City Airport, 9 miles, is the closest.

Does Heathrow have more than one terminal?

Yes, four in use: Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and they are far apart. Give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there.

Our group arrives on different flights — can that be arranged?

Yes. Each flight gets its own transfer, all of them in the organiser's account with separate confirmations. Before you book a van, tell support how many cases, boxes or sports bags travel with the party, not only the number of passengers.

Do UK airports charge for dropping off at the terminal?

Most large airports do, and several raised their drop-off charges in 2026. Heathrow does not allow pick-ups on the terminal forecourts at all; collections take place from the terminal car parks. The rules and current rates of each charge are published by the authority or airport that runs it.

What do passengers need to know about UK airports in 2026 and 2027?

Trains no longer call at the Terminals 2 and 3 station at Heathrow, shut on 25 June 2026, and the Terminal 4 multi-storey car park closed on 23 June 2026. Manchester Airport has worked with two terminals since Terminal 1 closed in early 2026. Check before you fly whether your nationality needs an ETA; British and Irish citizens do not.
