Getting Around Mainz

Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the Rhine's left bank, across the river from Wiesbaden. The city's business profile rests on media, health, biotechnology and digital technology. ZDF, the national broadcaster, runs its broadcasting centre on the Lerchenberg, BioNTech has its headquarters here, and the glass and technology group Schott is one of the long-established industrial names.

Mainz Hauptbahnhof is on several ICE routes, including the line from Hamburg and Cologne via Mainz to Frankfurt and Nuremberg,. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.

The low-emission zone that Mainz shared with Wiesbaden was lifted for the Mainz city area on 1 October 2025, so a sticker is no longer needed on this side of the Rhine. For a day that runs from a lab visit to a meeting at a ministry and a studio appointment on the Lerchenberg, booked by the hour, one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Airport Transfers in Mainz

Frankfurt Airport is 29 km from Mainz, 40–55 minutes by car, and is also reachable from Mainz Hauptbahnhof by train. Its passenger terminals are Terminal 1 and Terminal 3; give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there.

Frankfurt-Hahn, up in the Hunsrück, is 86 km west of Mainz, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and handles mostly low-cost and leisure routes. Saarbrücken Airport is 140 km away, 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. The right one depends on your airline and route.

Book with your flight number. For an arrival, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. For a departure from Mainz, what counts is the length of the drive, not the time on the clock: 40–55 minutes to the airport, plus extra time when the Rhine bridges and the Mainz motorway ring are busy. Journey times vary with traffic and weather. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Cross-Border Travel from Mainz

Mainz is a wine city, and the vineyards start close by. Rüdesheim in the Rheingau is 32 km away by road, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Heidelberg is 91 km south, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and Darmstadt 39 km, 40–55 minutes. Wiesbaden, the Hessian state capital across the Rhine, is just 12 km away, 25–35 minutes, and its RheinMain CongressCenter has room for up to 12,500 people.

Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace in France, is 196 km away, 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 55 minutes. For a wine buyer touring Alsace or a private party, the trip is booked as one journey, with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border, and the cases bought there ride home in the same boot.

Germany has notified the European Commission of temporary checks at its internal land borders, and France has notified the European Commission of checks at its internal borders, so a check is possible in either direction. Carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

Groups & Congress Travel in Mainz

The Rheingoldhalle, the congress centre on the Rhine next to the old town, has about 9,000 m² of event space, more than 20 meeting rooms and a main hall for up to 2,200 people. Fastnacht brings crowds of a different kind: the Rosenmontag parade in 2027 is on 8 February, and the streets of the centre are given over to it.

When you book for other people, all their transfers can be kept in one account, each with its own booking and confirmation. If congress guests reach Frankfurt on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own. For a group heading to the same session or carnival evening, a Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats; the vehicle is matched to the load.

For the carnival weekend and for large congresses, book as early as possible. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early on those dates. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

Round-Trip Service
Round-Trip Service books both directions in one reservation: Frankfurt Airport to your hotel on the Mainz riverside, and back to the airport after the congress or the carnival weekend. Around Rosenmontag, when the centre is closed for the parade, it helps to have the departure fixed early. With both directions in one booking, the return is secured from the start; you set both pickup times yourself, and the confirmation lists them.
Hourly Service
Hourly service is booked by time, not by route. Name the address in Mainz where the day starts, the address where it finishes and how many hours you want, and one chauffeur and one car are reserved for you for that time. Share the plan for the day when you book, and the chauffeur will have it in advance. It suits a day of meetings or visits rather than one ride across town.
One-Way Service
One-Way Service covers one journey between two addresses: Terminal 1 to a hotel near the Rheingoldhalle, Mainz Hauptbahnhof to the ZDF on the Lerchenberg, Mainz to a winery in Rüdesheim. For an airport pickup, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur; for a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Mainzer Johannisnacht, and which streets does it close?

The four-day festival is held every June around Johannes Gutenberg's traditional birthday; in 2026 it ran from 19 to 22 June. It spreads from the Schillerplatz, Gutenbergplatz and Markt to the Rhine bank between the Kaisertor and Fort Malakoff, and roads in that area are closed. For a hotel there, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go.

When is the Mainzer Weinmarkt?

Every year in late summer, across two weekends in late August and early September, in the Stadtpark, also known as the Volkspark; the 90th edition ran from 27 August to 6 September 2026. For the ride back from an evening there, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Is there a seat for small children on a family trip to the Rheingau?

Yes. Ask for it in the booking form: there is a booster for older children and a safety seat for babies and toddlers, and you set how many you need.

What do you need to know about Mainz in 2026–2027?

Since 1 October 2025 no emissions sticker is needed in Mainz. The Rosenmontag parade is on 8 February 2027. Germany's notified checks at its internal land borders run until 15 March 2027, which matters on a trip to Alsace.
