Getting Around Stansted
This page is about the village of Stansted Mountfitchet, usually just called Stansted, in the Uttlesford district of Essex. It is a separate place from London Stansted Airport, which lies a short drive to the east.
The village has a long history. Mountfitchet Castle, on the hill above the centre, is a reconstruction of a Norman motte-and-bailey fort, and the House on the Hill Toy Museum stands next to it. A tower windmill from the 18th century still overlooks the houses.
Stansted Mountfitchet station has trains to London Liverpool Street, while the airport has its own station on a different branch. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival. If you are staying in a cottage on a lane outside the village, send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.
For a day that mixes a meeting at the airport with visits in Bishop's Stortford and Saffron Walden, choose an hourly booking: one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve.

Airport Transfers in Stansted
From the village, Stansted Airport is 6 miles by road, 20–30 minutes. It is the fourth-busiest airport in the UK, with 29.76 million passengers in 2025, and all flights use one terminal building. When you book, name the airport, not just "Stansted", so the trip is not confused with an address in the village.
London City Airport is 33 miles, 1 hour to 1 hour 25 minutes, and Luton Airport 39 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. Southend Airport is 43 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes; Heathrow is 59 miles, 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. The right one depends on your airline and route.
Book with your flight number. Coming home, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pick-up to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. For a departure from Stansted, what counts is the length of the drive, not the time on the clock: the airport is close, but if your flight leaves early, leave time for the terminal approach roads and security. Journey times vary with traffic and weather. You set the pick-up time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Day-Trip Travel from Stansted
Bishop's Stortford, the nearest town, is 4 miles south over the Hertfordshire border, 15–20 minutes. Linton, a village across the Cambridgeshire border, is 16 miles, 40–55 minutes.
Cambridge is 29 miles to the north, 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, for the colleges and the museums. Central London is 36 miles, 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours, with the slowest part inside the city.
For a long day out, Blenheim Palace, where Churchill was born, is 95 miles, 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. Coming back the same evening? Then reserve hours rather than a route; with a plain transfer the car leaves you at the palace, and the drive home needs its own reservation.

Groups & Event Travel in Stansted
Imagine a family gathering in the village, with relatives flying in to Stansted Airport from several European cities on the same weekend. For a party of that size, a Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats; the vehicle is matched to the load, including pushchairs and large suitcases.
When you book for other people, all their transfers can be kept in one account, each with its own booking and confirmation. Because guests come in on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own, with its own pick-up time.
The airport expected its busiest summer yet in 2026. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early in the summer months and around bank holidays. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.
