Getting Around Heidelberg

Heidelberg has two faces for a visitor. The old town stretches along the Neckar below the castle, and its spine is the Hauptstraße, a pedestrian street of about 1.4 km between Bismarckplatz and the Karlstor. Hotels on or just off the Hauptstraße are reached on foot for the final stretch.

The other face is new. West of the centre, on the former freight yard, the Bahnstadt district has grown up next to the Hauptbahnhof, and in April 2024 the Heidelberg Congress Center opened there. Arriving by rail, a congress delegate is a short distance from the hall. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.

Heidelberg's low-emission zone was lifted on 1 March 2023, after the city's air had met EU limits for several years.

For a day split between the congress centre, a university institute and a guest lecture near the Universitätsplatz, book by the hour: one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve. For a hotel on the Hauptstraße itself, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go.

Airport Transfers in Heidelberg

Frankfurt Airport is 87 km north of Heidelberg, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes via the A5. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden is 93 km south, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and Stuttgart Airport 127 km, 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. The right one depends on your airline and route.

At Frankfurt, check your terminal before you book: since April 2026 the new Terminal 3 has been in service alongside Terminal 1, and the two buildings are not side by side. Give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there.

Book with your flight number. For an arrival, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. For a departure from Heidelberg, what counts is the length of the drive, not the time on the clock: 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes to Frankfurt Airport when the A5 is moving, longer at peak times. Journey times vary with traffic and weather. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Cross-Border Travel from Heidelberg

Mannheim is only 21 km away, 30–40 minutes, and Karlsruhe 55 km, 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes. Frankfurt is 89 km north, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and Stuttgart 121 km, 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. In Mannheim, the Maimarkt, billed as the biggest regional fair in Germany, is held from 24 April to 4 May 2027, and the Quadrate in the city centre have letters and numbers instead of street names. For a visiting professor or a business team, a car from the hotel to the meeting saves a change of trains on the way.

For a day out, the old walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber lies 154 km east, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes. Colmar in Alsace is 200 km south-west, 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours, and the trip into France is booked like any other, with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border.

Germany has notified the European Commission of temporary checks at its internal land borders, and France has notified the European Commission of checks at its internal borders. Carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

Groups & Congress Travel in Heidelberg

The Heidelberg Congress Center has room for up to 3,800 people in its halls and ten meeting rooms. Its main hall alone covers 1,500 m² and takes up to 1,800 guests, and a studio on site allows congresses to be streamed. For a medical or scientific meeting, that means delegates arriving from Frankfurt, Stuttgart and the station over one or two days.

When you book for other people, all their transfers can be kept in one account, each with its own booking and confirmation. If speakers and delegates fly in on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own. For a faculty group or a team going from the hotel to the hall together, a Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats; the vehicle is matched to the load.

Book early for congress dates and for the Christmas market weeks from late November. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early at those times. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

With both directions in one booking, the return is secured from the start; you set both pickup times yourself, and the confirmation lists them.
Hourly Service
Hourly service is booked by time, not by route. Name the address in Heidelberg where the day starts, the address where it finishes and how many hours you want, and one chauffeur and one car are reserved for you for that time. Share the plan for the day when you book, and the chauffeur will have it in advance. It suits a day of meetings or visits rather than one ride across town.
One-Way Service
One-Way Service covers one journey between two addresses: Frankfurt Airport to a hotel in the Bahnstadt, a hotel near Bismarckplatz to the Heidelberg Congress Center, Heidelberg to a meeting in Mannheim or Karlsruhe. For an airport pickup, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur; for a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Heidelberg University Hospital, and which address should I give?

Its main campus is Im Neuenheimer Feld in Neuenheim, on the north bank of the Neckar. Each clinic there has its own building number, for example Im Neuenheimer Feld 410 for the Medical Clinic or 430 for the Children's Hospital, and some departments sit on a separate site in Bergheim, Thibautstraße 2. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

We are travelling to Heidelberg with small children. How do we get seats for them?

Request them when you book. The form offers two kinds, a booster for older children and a seat for babies and toddlers, each with its own counter, so a family can set exactly what the drive from the airport needs.

How do I get up to Heidelberg Castle?

The Bergbahn funicular runs from the Kornmarkt station in the old town up to the castle and on to the Königstuhl. On foot, it is about 330 steps from the Kornmarkt to the castle entrance. For a hotel on the Hauptstraße, send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

What do you need to know about Heidelberg in 2026–2027?

The 2026 Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December on six squares in the old town; at Bismarckplatz it stays open until 1 January 2027. Frankfurt Airport now uses Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Germany's notified checks at its internal land borders run until 15 March 2027.
