Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg: Route and Drive Time
Heidelberg lies south of the airport, where the Neckar leaves the Odenwald hills for the Rhine plain. The transfer covers 87 km, usually 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes: a short stretch of the A3, then the A67 and the A5 southwards to the Heidelberg exit. The A5 is the long middle section, and its traffic largely decides the time.
Arriving from the motorway, the car enters the city from the west. The Bahnstadt, the new district next to the Hauptbahnhof with the Heidelberg Congress Center, comes first. The old town is further east along the river, below the castle, and its narrow streets make the last part slower.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. For a university address, name the institute and building, as faculties are spread across several parts of the city.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Frankfurt Airport
With a drive of over an hour ahead, a smooth start at the airport matters. Flights at FRA use Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, the latter inaugurated on 22 April 2026 and in regular service from the next day, and the ride between them on the SkyLine train lasts roughly eight minutes. Give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there.
While you are still in the air, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
Terminal 2 stays closed for refurbishment until the mid-2030s. If you last flew through Frankfurt before June 2026 and remember a different building, check the terminal on your current ticket before you book.

Arriving at Your Address in Heidelberg
Between Bismarckplatz and the Karlstor, the old town is threaded by the Hauptstraße, about 1.4 km of pedestrian street along the Neckar side. It is closed to cars, so for a hotel on the Hauptstraße or in the lanes beside it, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go.
West of the centre, the Bahnstadt has grown on the former freight yard. The Heidelberg Congress Center opened there in April 2024, a few steps from the Hauptbahnhof, with ten meeting rooms and a streaming studio. Since 1 March 2023 Heidelberg has had no low-emission zone, which leaves one rule fewer for the car.
A visiting professor or a congress delegate may well have the Bahnstadt as the first stop and a hotel in the old town as the second; each is its own address in the booking.

From Heidelberg Back to Frankfurt Airport
The return takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, so plan by the drive, not by habit, and allow more before a morning flight, when the A5 northbound is at its fullest. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
The car then drives to whichever terminal your departure uses, 1 or 3.
From an old-town hotel on the pedestrian Hauptstraße, the pickup is at the nearest point the car can reach, so allow a few minutes on foot with your luggage. Anyone coming down from the castle by the Bergbahn funicular arrives at the Kornmarkt, in the heart of the old town, and the pickup point is agreed from there. In the Christmas market weeks from late November, the squares fill up, and getting out of the centre takes longer than on an ordinary evening.
