Airports in Canada

Canada has no single gateway. Toronto Pearson, with about 47.3 million passengers in 2025, lies 28 km from downtown Toronto, and Billy Bishop airport on the Toronto Islands is only 4 km away. Vancouver International, with 26,913,561 passengers, is 13 km from Vancouver. Montréal–Trudeau counted 22,364,685 passengers and is 19 km from Montreal, and Calgary International, with 19,409,550, is 14 km from the city centre.

Further east and west, Edmonton International is 31 km from Edmonton, Halifax Stanfield 33 km from Halifax, Ottawa 14 km, Québec City's Jean Lesage 16 km, and Winnipeg 6 km from its city. Victoria, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Saskatoon have their own airports, and Hamilton, Waterloo, Windsor, London, Regina, Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown and St. John's have theirs as well.

Arrivals and Departures

Layouts differ. Toronto Pearson has Terminal 1, where Air Canada and the Star Alliance airlines arrive, and Terminal 3, used by WestJet, Porter, Air Transat, Flair and the SkyTeam airlines; there is no Terminal 2. Montréal–Trudeau is a single building in three sections: domestic, international and the jetty for flights to the United States. Calgary has a Domestic and an International Terminal. At Billy Bishop, cars use the mainland pavilion, and a pedestrian tunnel or a ferry leads to the island terminal.

Nine of these airports offer US preclearance. With US preclearance, you clear US customs before boarding a flight to the US. For an arrival, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. Give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there. For a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it. Allow more time for the drive in winter weather.

From the Airport to Cities, Resorts and the US Border

Many airport transfers in Canada end in the mountains or across the border. From Calgary International, Banff is 136 km, 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes on the Trans-Canada Highway. From Vancouver, Whistler is 136 km, 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, and from Montréal–Trudeau, Mont-Tremblant is 136 km, 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes.

Some travellers use an American airport. Detroit Metropolitan is 37 km from Windsor, 40–55 minutes, Buffalo Niagara 46 km from Niagara Falls, 40–55 minutes, and Bellingham 81 km from Vancouver, 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, in each case plus the border crossing. Each transfer is done with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border. Visitors who need an ESTA must have it approved before they cross into the US by land, and they receive their I-94 record at the land port. Carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

Groups, Luggage and Events

Ski groups, congress delegations and school parties travel with more than suitcases. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats; the vehicle is matched to the load. If a group arrives on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own. When you book for other people, all their transfers can be kept in one account, each with its own booking and confirmation.

The busiest airport weeks follow the calendar: the Formula 1 weekend in Montreal in May, the Calgary Stampede on 9–18 July 2027, the ski seasons from the late autumn and the cruise season at Vancouver until mid-October. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early for those dates. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your airport transfer with Bookinglane.

Can I request a child seat for a transfer in Canada?

Child seats are requested in the booking form: choose a booster or an infant and child safety seat and the number you need. Vehicle availability varies by market.

Which Canadian airports have US preclearance?

Pearson and Billy Bishop in Toronto, plus the airports of Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Winnipeg and Ottawa. Victoria, Kelowna, Québec City, Saskatoon and Abbotsford have none, so allow for the US formalities on arrival in the United States.

My flight is delayed: does the airport pickup still work?

Yes. The chauffeur follows your flight, so the pickup follows the actual landing. Complimentary waiting time is included with airport pickups and is counted from the actual landing, which leaves room for customs and baggage claim.

I have golf bags or other bulky items: how do I book a transfer in Canada?

Enter the number of bags in the booking form; for golf bags, bikes, skis or other bulky items, tell support so the vehicle is matched to the load. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 passengers with their luggage.

Do you collect passengers from business and private flights?

Yes, with the same booking flow. Enter the business aviation terminal as the pickup point, with the planned time and the flight details you have, and the confirmation shows the vehicle, the meeting point and the time. For a departure, you set the pickup time yourself. A confirmed booking can be changed under the conditions of the Terms of Service; for large parties, write to support.

What do passengers need to know about Canadian airports in 2026 and 2027?

Toronto Pearson awarded a multi-year renewal of Terminals 1 and 3 in July 2026, built in stages while both stay open. Montréal–Trudeau expects its REM light-rail station by the end of 2027. Since 27 July 2026 Windsor and Detroit have a third road link, the new Gordie Howe bridge, and the Lacolle crossing works last until winter 2027.
