Getting Around Linz

Linz is an industrial city with a growing conference calendar. The voestalpine works line the Danube east of the centre. The Tabakfabrik, a former factory now home to more than 250 companies and start-ups, sits between them and the old town. The Design Center is south of the Landstraße, the main shopping street. None of it is far from the rest, and little of it is comfortable on foot with a suitcase.

Linz Hauptbahnhof is on the Westbahn, the main line between Vienna and Munich: trains to Vienna at least twice an hour, a direct train to Vienna Airport in about an hour and three quarters, and Munich in the other direction. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.

A business day in Linz often combines a plant visit with a meeting in town, at the Design Center or the Tabakfabrik. Booked by the hour, one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve.

The Landstraße, 1.3 km from the Hauptplatz to the Musiktheater, is a pedestrian zone, and the Hauptplatz itself is car-free with an exemption for taxis. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Airport Transfers in Linz

Linz Airport is 13 km south-west of the centre at Hörsching, 15 to 25 minutes, with a short list of scheduled routes and the winter and summer charters. Vienna Airport is the option for a wider choice of flights: about 210 km east on the A1, with a direct train from Linz Hauptbahnhof in about an hour and three quarters. Munich, about 235 km west, is the other hub within reach.

So a flight from Vienna is, for Linz, a 210 km journey before the airport, and it is booked as one: from the address you leave, on the A1 for most of it, with the last stretch round Vienna on the A21 and the S1.

Book with your flight number. For an arrival at Linz or Vienna, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. Leaving Linz, the useful thing to know is the length of the drive: 15 to 25 minutes to Hörsching, around two and a half hours to Vienna Airport on the A1. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Cross-Border Travel from Linz

Linz lies between Salzburg and Vienna, and most long journeys from here go one way or the other: Vienna about 185 km east, Salzburg about 135 km west, both on the A1. The other Austrian direction is south, into the Salzkammergut: Gmunden about 75 km, Bad Ischl about 105 km, Hallstatt about 125 km. A trip that starts in Linz and ends in any of them is booked as one journey, from the address you leave to the address you reach.

Across the border, Passau is about 80 km to the north-west, České Budějovice about 95 km north on the S10 and the Czech D3, and Prague about 245 km from Linz. A journey across the border is booked with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border.

Germany and the Czech Republic are both in the Schengen area, but Austria and Germany both run temporary checks at their internal borders, renewed a few months at a time, and they can add time. Carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

Groups & Congress Travel in Linz

Linz's group calendar is built around Ars Electronica. The festival, held in Linz since 1979, takes over the city centre for five days every September, and its contributors arrive from dozens of countries with a festival office doing the booking. The Design Center has its own congress and trade-fair cluster in October and November, and the industrial side of the city, the plant visits and supplier days, runs all year.

Whoever is organising can set the programme up in one account, with each journey confirmed on its own: an artist off the Railjet from Vienna, a delegation from Vienna Airport, a client for the afternoon at the works. Where a group moves together, a Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats.

Book early for the Ars Electronica week in September and the October and November congress cluster, when vehicle availability is limited. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

Round-Trip Service
Arrival and departure in one booking. In Linz the return is the half to secure in the Ars Electronica week in September and the October and November congress cluster at the Design Center, when local vehicles are taken long before the dates. Book both directions together and your return is held from the start; you set both pickup times yourself, and the confirmation lists them.
Hourly Service
Hourly service is booked by time, not by route. Name the address in Linz where the day starts, the address where it finishes and how many hours you want, and one chauffeur and one car are reserved for you for that time. Share the plan for the day when you book, and the chauffeur will have it in advance. It suits a day of meetings or visits rather than one ride across town.
One-Way Service
One journey between two addresses: Linz Airport at Hörsching to the Hauptplatz, the Hauptbahnhof to the Tabakfabrik, Linz to Vienna Airport for an early flight. Route and timing are set when you book. For an airport pickup your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur; for a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What airport is closest to Linz?

Linz Airport at Hörsching, 13 km south-west of the centre and 15 to 25 minutes by car. It has a short list of scheduled routes plus winter and summer charters, so many travellers use Vienna Airport, 210 km east on the A1, or Munich, 237 km west. Book with your flight number, and the pickup follows the time you actually land.

How do I get from Vienna Airport to Linz?

By car it is 210 km, 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes, most of it on the A1, booked as one transfer from the terminal to your address in Linz. There is also a direct train from the airport to Linz Hauptbahnhof in about an hour and three quarters. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.

Is Uber available in Linz?

Bookinglane is a pre-booked chauffeur service: you reserve a car and driver for a set journey, such as a hotel near the Hauptplatz to Hörsching, 15 to 25 minutes away, or the Hauptbahnhof to the Tabakfabrik. The Hauptplatz itself is car-free, so send the full address with your booking and the confirmation will tell you where the car can stop.

How far is Linz from Vienna?

185 km east on the A1, 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes by car. Salzburg is 136 km west on the same motorway, 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes, and Passau 79 km across the German border. Each trip is booked as one journey from the address you leave to the address you reach. For Passau or Prague, carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

What do you need to know about Linz in 2026–2027?

Ars Electronica takes over the city centre for five days every September, and the Design Center's congress cluster follows in October and November: book those weeks early. If you fly via Vienna, its Terminal 3 extension should open in 2027, and arrivals are unchanged. Austria and Germany both run temporary checks at their internal borders, notified to the European Commission until mid-March 2027.
