Getting Around Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Two villages, one valley: Saalbach and Hinterglemm lie about 4 km apart on the floor of the Glemmtal, a valley with no through road, and they have been one municipality since 1987. Vorderglemm is towards the valley mouth, with Viehhofen below it. Guests book Saalbach-Hinterglemm as one name and find out on arrival which end they are at.

No railway reaches the Glemmtal. The mainline stations are Zell am See and Saalfelden, and from either the rest of the way is by road up the valley. With skis and a family's luggage, that last leg is where a car helps. Give us the train and its arrival time and the car is booked to meet it.

The Skicircus links the valley with Leogang and Fieberbrunn, and the Ski ALPIN CARD adds Zell am See and Kaprun, so the week rarely stays in one village. Zell am See, about 20 km away, is where many evenings end up. Booked by the hour, one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve, whether dinner is in the next village or down at the lake.

Unlike many resorts, the Glemmtal has no pedestrian zone or barrier: the road runs straight through the centre of Saalbach and along the village street in Hinterglemm, so most addresses can be reached from the road itself. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Airport Transfers to Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Salzburg is the airport most guests use: about 95 km, around an hour and a half. Innsbruck is about 160 km and two to three hours away. Munich, about 210 km away and nearer three hours, is worth it when the flights are better.

From Salzburg and Munich the route follows the B311 through Lofer and Saalfelden to Maishofen, then turns into the Glemmtal. Coming from the south, the A10 Tauern motorway leads to Bischofshofen and on past Zell am See to the same turn. From Innsbruck the A12 runs to Wörgl before the route heads east. However you come, the whole resort hangs off that one turn at Maishofen and one road up a valley that leads nowhere else.

Book with your flight number: your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. For the flight home, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Cross-Border Travel from Saalbach-Hinterglemm

The Glemmtal is a dead end, so every onward journey starts by driving out of it. Salzburg is about 95 km away, good for a day in the city or the night before flying. Zell am See is about 20 km, Kaprun about 28, and Kitzbühel is further west in Tyrol if the second week is booked there. One booking covers the move, from the hotel in the valley to the next address.

Munich is about 210 km north, over the border past Lofer, and plenty of guests start or finish there. The journey into Germany is booked the normal way: one chauffeur, one vehicle, the whole distance, no change at the frontier. Germany is part of Schengen, but it currently runs temporary checks on its border with Austria, so every passenger should carry the travel documents their nationality and itinerary require.

Groups, Ski Equipment & Winter Travel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is built for groups: ski clubs, school parties and friends filling a chalet between them. With a group, the luggage settles the vehicle before the headcount does. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats. List the skis, boards and bags along with the passengers, and the vehicle is chosen to fit them. When the group is split across flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own.

The Glemmtal road is a valley road with no pass on it, so winter here is about equipment rather than closures. Austrian law requires winter tyres from 1 November to 15 April whenever roads are wintry, and buses are fitted with them for the whole season regardless of the weather.

Christmas, New Year and the winter Saturdays are when local vehicles and drivers are booked up early, so book those first. If you need something outside a standard booking, speak to support and they will put the arrangement together.

Round-Trip Service
In and out of the Glemmtal in a single booking. The way out is what to protect: on winter Saturdays the valley's departures all use the same road down to Maishofen, and local vehicles and drivers are booked up early. Booked together from the start, your return is in place before you arrive; you set both pickup times yourself, and the confirmation lists them.
Hourly Service
Hourly service is booked by time, not by route. Name the address in Saalbach-Hinterglemm where the day starts, the address where it finishes and how many hours you want, and one chauffeur and one car are reserved for you for that time. Share the plan for the day when you book, and the chauffeur will have it in advance. It suits a day of meetings or visits rather than one ride across town.
One-Way Service
One trip between two points: Salzburg Airport to a hotel in Hinterglemm, Zell am See station up the Glemmtal, or Saalbach to Kaprun for a glacier day. Route and time are part of the booking. If you are flying in, your chauffeur checks the flight status and times the pickup to when you actually land, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. For a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you fly into for Saalbach?

Salzburg, which most guests use: about 95 km, 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes by car. Innsbruck is about 160 km, 2 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours, and Munich about 210 km, 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes. Every route ends with the turn at Maishofen into the Glemmtal. Add the flight number to the booking, and the pickup follows the time you actually land.

How long does it take to transfer from Munich to Saalbach?

Usually 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes, for about 210 km. From Munich the drive comes down the German A8, crosses into Austria near Lofer and follows the B311 via Saalfelden to Maishofen before turning up the valley. The same chauffeur and vehicle cover the whole distance, across the border as well. Germany belongs to Schengen, but it runs temporary checks on its border with Austria, so everyone in the car needs the travel documents their nationality and itinerary require.

Is there a train to Saalbach-Hinterglemm?

No, no railway reaches the Glemmtal. The nearest mainline stations are Zell am See, about 20 km away, and Saalfelden, and from either one the last part is by road up the valley. With skis and a family's bags, that last part is where a car helps most. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.

Can the car get to my hotel in Saalbach or Hinterglemm?

The Glemmtal has no pedestrian zone and no barrier: the road runs through the middle of Saalbach and along the village street in Hinterglemm, about 4 km further up the valley. What matters is which village you are staying in, since the resort is booked under one name. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Our group is arriving on different flights — can that be arranged?

Yes: every arrival gets a transfer of its own. Saalbach-Hinterglemm sees many ski clubs, school parties and chalet groups, and for them the luggage decides the vehicle before the headcount does. List skis, boards and bags for every flight, and the vehicle is matched to the load. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats.

What do you need to know about Saalbach-Hinterglemm in 2026–2027?

Salzburg, the airport most Glemmtal guests use, has started a terminal renewal: clearing a hangar began in autumn 2026, building work proper is scheduled from April 2027 to October 2033, and the new departures area should open in 2030. Arriving passengers still leave through a single arrivals hall and exit. In the valley itself there is no pass to close, so winter means winter tyres, and Christmas, New Year and winter Saturdays are the dates to book first.
