Salzburg Airport to Linz: Route and Drive Time
Linz is 140 km east of Salzburg Airport. The airport has its own exit on the A1, the Westautobahn, and within minutes of the terminal the car has joined the motorway, staying on it for nearly the whole way. The drive usually takes 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes.
Two short stretches decide where in that range you arrive: the motorway past Salzburg at the start, and the approach into Linz at the end, where the morning and evening traffic of an industrial city joins the A1. In between, the kilometres pass steadily, though snow on the open stretch can slow a winter drive.
The address in Linz adds its own minutes. The Hauptbahnhof and the Design Center are reached soon after leaving the motorway; the voestalpine works on the Danube lie on the eastern side of the city, the furthest point from the Salzburg direction. Journey times vary with traffic and weather.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Salzburg Airport
A business traveller heading for Linz often lands at Salzburg on a connection through Frankfurt or Istanbul, and the airport keeps that arrival simple. Of its two buildings, Terminal 1 handles the regular traffic and the Amadeus Terminal 2 adds capacity for the winter-Saturday charters, yet a single arrivals hall and a single exit serve both.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. A missed connection in Frankfurt and a later flight into Salzburg simply move the start of the drive.
SZG is in the early phase of a terminal renewal that runs until 2033. Site clearance started in September 2026 and the main works follow from 2027; the shared arrivals hall and exit remain in use throughout this phase.

Arriving at Your Address in Linz
Most people who drive from Salzburg to Linz are going to one of three kinds of address. For a congress, it is the Design Center, on the southern side of the Landstraße. For a festival week, it is the centre itself, where Ars Electronica takes over the streets each September. For industry, it is the voestalpine site along the river or one of the more than 250 firms in the Tabakfabrik, the converted factory between the old town and the works.
Hotels cluster around the Hauptplatz, and that is where access narrows. The square is closed to cars other than taxis, and the Landstraße is pedestrianised from the Hauptplatz to the Musiktheater, so the car may set you down in a side street a few steps away. For a plant visit, the gate matters more than the street name.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For the works, include the gate or building where you are expected.

From Linz Back to Salzburg Airport
Leaving Linz, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes to Salzburg Airport, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
Two things can lengthen the return. On a winter Saturday the ski charters crowd SZG in both directions. And in winter the A1 itself may be slower: between 1 November and 15 April Austrian law requires winter tyres whenever conditions are wintry, and buses run on them all season whatever the weather.
If your onward flight leaves from Linz rather than Salzburg, Hörsching is 13 km from the centre and the long run disappears. A week that ends in Salzburg can also be split: Linz to your Salzburg hotel first, then the 5 km to the terminal on departure day.
