Getting Around Herten
Herten is a town of about 60,700 people in the Recklinghausen district, in the north of the Ruhr. Coal shaped it: the first mines opened in 1872 and the last one closed in 2008. The former Ewald colliery is now a visitor centre for renewable energy.
The town has two faces. Schloss Herten is a moated red-brick castle from the 14th century in a park, and the Westerholt district keeps many half-timbered houses. Recklinghausen is only 5 km away, 15–20 minutes, and Gelsenkirchen 12 km, 25–35 minutes.
Since December 2022 Herten has had an S-Bahn station again, with direct trains to Recklinghausen, Essen, Wuppertal and Hagen; long-distance trains stop in the neighbouring cities. Add the train and its arrival time to the booking, and the car is scheduled for that arrival.
Herten is part of the Ruhr low-emission zone. For appointments at Ewald and in Bochum within one day, book by the hour: one chauffeur and one vehicle stay with you for the time you reserve. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Dortmund Airport is 46 km east, 45 minutes to 1 hour by car along the A2. Düsseldorf Airport is only a little further, 60 km south-west, 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, and has a wider choice of flights. Münster/Osnabrück lies 85 km north, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes. Dortmund has a single terminal, with Wizz Air flights to Poland and Romania; Düsseldorf has one terminal with three piers; Münster/Osnabrück counted about 1.25 million passengers in 2025. The A2 and A43 cross close to Herten. Bochum is 22 km south, 30–40 minutes, Düsseldorf 66 km, 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, and Cologne 104 km, 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. In Bochum, Starlight Express has run since 1988, and the Ruhr University is one of Germany's ten largest. Messe Düsseldorf has more than 248,000 m² of indoor space and holds MEDICA from 15 to 18 November 2027; Koelnmesse in Cologne has 284,000 m². The Rheinkirmes fills the Rhine meadows in Düsseldorf from 16 to 25 July 2027.
Hanover is 232 km to the east along the A2, 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 25 minutes, and Bremen 229 km north, 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 25 minutes. A car on that distance lets you prepare a meeting on the back seat instead of watching for a connection, and the luggage does not leave the boot until you arrive. Hanover's exhibition grounds have about 392,000 m² of hall space, with the Hannover Messe from 5 to 8 April 2027, and the Bremen Christmas market runs on the Marktplatz from 23 November to 23 December 2026.
Groups & Event Travel in Herten
For a group, Herten's sites are spread out: Ewald on the former colliery grounds, the castle park, the old houses of Westerholt. If a day for a partner company or a school trip links two of them with a meal in town, it is simpler when everyone moves together. A school trip may add the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen, with more than 1,000 works.
