Dortmund Airport to Herten: Route and Drive Time
Herten is a town of about 60,700 people in the north of the Ruhr, part of the Recklinghausen district and north-west of the airport. The route uses the B1 and the B236 before the A2 takes over. In all it is 46 km, usually 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The A2 sets the pace. It is one of the main east–west freight routes of the region, and with heavy lorry traffic a trip moves towards the upper figure. From the motorway exit, the addresses are spread out: Ewald, the former colliery with the Hoheward visitor centre at Werner-Heisenberg-Straße 14, lies apart from the town centre, Schloss Herten sits in its own park, and Westerholt, with its half-timbered houses, is a separate district.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. Add the district to the address in the booking, especially for Westerholt.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Dortmund Airport
At DTM all flights arrive in one passenger terminal, so the booking needs no terminal and the whole family comes out in the same place. Its network leans east: Wizz Air flies to Poland, Romania and further into eastern Europe, so relatives visiting Herten from Katowice or Bucharest land a short drive away.
On the day, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
A family visit usually comes with more luggage than a business trip: suitcases, presents, a pushchair. Tell us how much there is when you book. A car that fits the load saves a second vehicle or repacking at the kerb, and the ride goes from the terminal to the front door in Herten.

Arriving at Your Address in Herten
Mining lasted in Herten from 1872 until 2008, well over a century. On the grounds of Ewald, once a colliery, visitors now learn about renewable energy beside the old winding towers. Schloss Herten, a moated red-brick castle from the 14th century, stands in a landscaped park, and Westerholt keeps a quarter of half-timbered houses.
The town regained a rail stop in December 2022: S-Bahn services now link it directly with Recklinghausen, Essen, Wuppertal and Hagen. For Intercity or ICE trains, though, you must go to a neighbouring city, which is one reason a car from the airport is the simpler choice.
Herten lies inside the Ruhr low-emission zone. Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For the castle or Ewald, name the car park or entrance you need.

From Herten Back to Dortmund Airport
For your departure, plan the pickup by the length of the drive: from Herten to the terminal it takes 45 minutes to 1 hour, and more when the A2 is busy with commuters and freight. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
With only one terminal at DTM, you need no instructions for the airport end, whatever your airline. In Herten, Westerholt and the outer districts add a few minutes on the way out to the motorway, and an early flight means leaving before the morning queues build up on the A2.
If your last day is spent on Halde Hoheward, name which of its dozen or so access points to use. If it is spent at Ewald or in the castle park, the car can collect you there, with your luggage packed and brought along, instead of returning to the hotel first.
