Getting Around Sotogrande

Sotogrande is not a town with a main square. It is a large residential estate with a marina, in the municipality of San Roque at the western end of the Costa del Sol, and its addresses are villas, golf clubs and apartments around the port. The marina has 1,382 berths and ranks first in Andalusia by number of berths. The golf courses include Real Club Valderrama, where the 1997 Ryder Cup was the first played in continental Europe, and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. On an estate laid out like this, the name "Sotogrande" alone does not tell a driver where you are.

Sotogrande has no station of its own. For the high-speed network the station is Málaga María Zambrano, about 110 km east, 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes away by road. Include your train details and arrival time when booking so we can arrange your pickup at the station.

Evenings are close at hand: the restaurants around the marina, the old town of San Roque, about 19 km away, and Gibraltar, about 26 km, for a night across the frontier. Book a transfer there and a second one back at the pickup time you set.

Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.

Airport Transfers to Sotogrande

Two airports serve Sotogrande, and the closer one is the smaller. Málaga-Costa del Sol, about 106 km east along the coast, is the main airport for the area; the transfer takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. Gibraltar International Airport is only about 26 km away, 35 to 45 minutes by road, making it convenient if a flight there fits your plans.

From Málaga the drive follows the AP-7 and A-7 down the coast, past Marbella and Estepona. From Gibraltar the car crosses the frontier at La Línea and heads north-east on the A-7. Journey times vary with traffic and the time of day.

Book with your flight number: your chauffeur monitors your flight and adjusts the pickup if your arrival time changes. Your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur. Leaving Sotogrande, allow for the drive to the airport when choosing your pickup time: 35 to 45 minutes to Gibraltar, 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes to Málaga, longer in August. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Long-Distance & Cross-Border Travel from Sotogrande

From Sotogrande a holiday can carry on along the coast: a few nights in Estepona, about 29 km east, or Marbella, about 56 km, or a move west to Tarifa, about 54 km. One booking takes you and your luggage from one hotel to the next.

Seville, about 205 km north-west, and Ronda, about 90 km inland, are the longer runs for a city stay or a day in the mountains. The high-speed network is reached at Málaga, so by car a trip to either is one journey from the estate rather than a drive to a station first.

Gibraltar, about 26 km south-west, is the frontier crossing on this coast, whether for a day in town, a hotel for the last nights or a flight home. The booking works as for any trip, with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border.

Gibraltar remains a British territory outside the EU, and the frontier is crossed at La Línea. Carry the travel documents your nationality and itinerary require.

Groups, Luggage & Summer Travel in Sotogrande

Groups here include guests coming for the polo, sailors with a boat in the marina and families opening a villa for the summer, and the luggage can be considerable: cases for several weeks, sailing kit for the boat. Tell us what you are bringing and the vehicle is matched to the load. A Sprinter van carries up to 12 people with their bags, and bigger groups go by coach, with up to 56 seats. If the group arrives on several flights, every arrival gets a transfer of its own.

August is polo month. Santa María Polo Club, with seven fields, holds its International Polo Tournament every summer, with the cups played from late July through August.

The dates to book early are August and the weeks either side of it. Local vehicles and drivers are booked up early for those dates. If your plans go beyond a standard booking, write to support with the dates, addresses, number of passengers, flights and luggage, and the team will arrange it.

Round-Trip Service
Arrival and departure, booked together. In Sotogrande the return is the part to fix early in August, the month of the International Polo Tournament, when local vehicles are taken well before the date. Reserving both legs together holds your departure from the start, from Gibraltar or from Málaga, and you set both pickup times yourself, and the confirmation lists them.
Hourly Service
Hourly service is booked by time, not by route. Name the address in Sotogrande where the day starts, the address where it finishes and how many hours you want, and one chauffeur and one car are reserved for you for that time. Share the plan for the day when you book, and the chauffeur will have it in advance. It suits a day of meetings or visits rather than one ride across town.
One-Way Service
A single journey between two addresses: Gibraltar Airport to a villa on the estate, Málaga Airport to an apartment by the marina, Sotogrande to Estepona for a few more nights on the coast. Route and timing are set when you book. For an airport pickup your chauffeur monitors your flight and adjusts the pickup if your arrival time changes, and your booking confirmation shows where to meet the chauffeur; for a departure, you set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) is smaller and much closer, about 26 km away, 35 to 45 minutes, and convenient if a flight there fits your plans. Is Sotogrande in Spain or Gibraltar?

It is in Spain. Sotogrande is a large residential estate with a marina in the municipality of San Roque, at the western end of the Costa del Sol. Gibraltar, a British territory outside the EU, is about 26 km to the south-west, across the frontier at La Línea.

How do I get to Sotogrande?

By road. From Málaga Airport the AP-7 and A-7 run down the coast past Marbella and Estepona; from Gibraltar Airport the car crosses into La Línea and heads north-east on the A-7. Sotogrande has no station of its own: the high-speed network is reached at Málaga María Zambrano, about 110 km east, 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes away by road.

How do you cross from Gibraltar into Spain?

By road, at La Línea, where the frontier between Gibraltar, a British territory outside the EU, and Spain remains in place. A transfer to Sotogrande runs with the same chauffeur and car from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border. Take the travel documents required for your nationality and itinerary.

How far is Sotogrande from Marbella?

About 56 km east along the coast, 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes by road; Estepona lies in between, about 29 km from Sotogrande. A few nights in Marbella after a stay on the estate take one booking, from the villa or hotel to the next address, with the luggage in the car.

How do I get to the Sotogrande marina?

By road: Sotogrande is about 26 km from Gibraltar Airport and about 106 km from Málaga Airport. The marina has 1,382 berths, the most in Andalusia, with apartments and restaurants around it, and on an estate laid out like this the name Sotogrande alone does not tell a driver where you are. Send the full address with your booking; the confirmation then tells you where the car will stop.
