London Gatwick Airport to London: Route and Drive Time
Gatwick lies well outside the capital, in the Crawley borough of West Sussex, and central London, measured at Charing Cross, is 31 miles to the north, normally 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes by car. The road is the M23 and then the old Brighton Road, the A23, which enters London from the south through Coulsdon, Croydon and Streatham.
The motorway section is short, and the stretch from Coulsdon inwards runs through suburban high streets and junctions. Hotels south of the Thames, around Waterloo and the South Bank, come first on this approach, and an address in the City or the West End means one of the river bridges as well.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. On the A23, the weekday morning and evening peaks add the most.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at London Gatwick Airport
The North and South Terminals at Gatwick stand roughly a mile apart, with a shuttle train running between them. Your ticket names the terminal: give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there. Gatwick directs collections to the Short Stay parking at both terminals.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pick-up around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pick-up rules.
The rail link is the obvious comparison. By train, Victoria is about 30 minutes away on the non-stop Gatwick Express, and London Bridge 29 minutes on the quickest Thameslink service. With several suitcases, children or a hotel far from either station, the car takes you all the way without a change.

Arriving at Your Address in London
Central London divides into quarters with their own character. Westminster holds Parliament and the government offices; Mayfair and the West End are where the grand hotels, theatre stages and big stores are found; the City, or Square Mile, governs itself as a separate local authority and is home to the banks and law firms; King's Cross has grown into an office district around its two stations.
Part of Oxford Street, the stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, closes to vehicles on 26 October 2026; the trial runs into spring 2027, when it is reviewed. If your hotel or office is on that stretch or another street with limited access, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go.
For a flat or a hotel on an ordinary street, a number and a postcode do the job. If you are continuing by Eurostar from St Pancras International, put the station in the booking instead.

From London Back to London Gatwick Airport
For the drive back, think in hours rather than miles: 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes in normal conditions, and longer on a weekday morning, when the A23 through Croydon carries commuter traffic. You set the pick-up time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
At Gatwick the car heads for the terminal printed on your ticket, so confirm it in the airline's app before you book. The North Terminal is the base for easyJet, and the South Terminal handles British Airways short-haul flights, but allocations have changed before.
Big London dates also slow the roads. Two to watch are the 2027 TCS London Marathon, run on 24 and 25 April, and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, open from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027; on such days, start earlier.
