Munich Airport to Munich: Route and Drive Time
The airport stands well outside the city to the north-east; Freising is the closest town to it. Into the centre it is 39 km by road, normally 40–55 minutes, on the A9 and the A92. The motorway section is quick, and most of the variation comes later, inside the city, where rush hour, a fair or the Oktoberfest can add a good deal.
After the motorway, the address shapes the rest of the trip. Schwabing, in the north, comes first. Marienplatz and the old town lie further in, inside the Mittlerer Ring. The Messe is on the eastern edge, in Riem, 46 km from the terminal and 45 minutes to 1 hour away. The Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest grounds, is south-west of the old town, so a hotel near it means crossing most of the city.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Munich Airport
Your airline decides which of the two terminals you land at. Terminal 2, opened in 2003 and built together with Lufthansa, handles the Lufthansa Group and the Star Alliance; some of its gates are in a satellite building, linked to the main hall by an underground train that takes under a minute. Terminal 1 serves the other airlines. Give your terminal in the booking and the car goes there.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
For a family, a stand crew with display boxes or a guest staying in Schwabing, a car goes from the terminal to the address with no change of train on the way.

Arriving at Your Address in Munich
The old town needs the most care. Kaufingerstraße and Neuhauser Straße form a pedestrian zone between Marienplatz and Stachus, opened for the 1972 Olympic Games. If your hotel is on it or in a side street, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go. The whole area inside the Mittlerer Ring is also a low-emission zone.
Business addresses are spread out. In Riem, where the Messe has stood since 1998, 18 halls spread over about 200,000 m², and its ICM, a congress building inside the grounds, takes meetings of up to 6,000 people. Name the hall, the gate or the ICM, because the street alone covers a very large site.
In Oktoberfest weeks, give the hotel as the destination rather than the festival grounds, and the car takes you there.

From Munich Back to Munich Airport
For the trip out, plan around the length of the drive: from the centre it takes 40–55 minutes on an ordinary day, and more at rush hour, in a busy fair week or while the Oktoberfest fills the city. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
Look at the terminal on your ticket before you set the time. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 share one main building, with the Munich Airport Center in between, and the car drives to the one you name.
On the closing day of a fair, a stand team with an evening flight can start its airport run at the Messe rather than the hotel. From the halls in Riem the drive to the airport is 46 km, 45 minutes to 1 hour. A hotel near the Theresienwiese lies south-west of the old town, the far side of the centre from the airport.
