Florence Airport to Lucca: Route and Drive Time
Lucca is 71 km west of Florence Airport, and one motorway covers nearly all of it. The A11 starts beside the airport at Peretola and runs west past Prato, Pistoia and Montecatini to the Lucca exit, a few minutes from the walls. The drive usually takes 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes.
The first kilometres count most. Around Florence and Prato the A11 carries commuter traffic at the morning and evening peaks, and an early-evening landing meets it head on. Once past Pistoia the road is usually steadier, and the last stretch is the ring road that follows the outside of the walls to your gate.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. A hotel inside the walls and a villa in the surrounding hills are reached by different roads, so put the full address next to your flight number.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Florence Airport
Guests heading for Lucca usually land at Pisa, so Florence is often the airport of a connecting flight or of a trip that began in Florence. The arrival itself is easy: one terminal on two levels, and one arrivals exit shared by all flights.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. After a long connection, that means the car heads west as soon as you are out, whatever time the aircraft actually arrived.
The runway at Florence is short, which leaves the airport sensitive to wind and poor visibility. If a flight is diverted to another airport, the pickup cannot follow it there, because the booking belongs to the airport you chose. Book a new transfer to Lucca from the airport where you actually land.

Arriving at Your Hotel in Lucca
The walls enclose Lucca's old town completely, and almost the whole area within them is a ZTL. Camera gates watch the way in, and newer gates also record vehicles on the way out. Some hotels and guesthouses stand inside, on the narrow streets around Piazza Napoleone and the amphitheatre square; others sit just outside a gate, or in villas among the hills to the north and east.
For a room inside the walls, send the name of the hotel and the gate nearest to it if the hotel has told you. For a villa, add the house name and any private lane, since rural addresses near Lucca can be hard to match to a map.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. Do the same for the day you fly home.

From Lucca Back to Florence Airport
Leaving Lucca, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes to Florence Airport, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
On the way back the busy part is at the end, where the A11 approaches Prato and Florence. A weekday afternoon flight means reaching that stretch in the late-afternoon traffic, and it is the reason the range is wide.
Many visitors combine Lucca with a few nights in Florence before flying. Florence is 77 km from Lucca, 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by car, and the transfer can end at your Florence hotel instead of the terminal. From there the airport is 10 km on another day.
