Düsseldorf Airport to Herne: Route and Drive Time
Herne lies north-east of the airport, between Bochum and Recklinghausen on the slope of the Emscher valley. The trip is 48 km and usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour: the A52 and the A40 carry you east, and the B226 leads north into the city, which the A42 and A43 motorways also cross.
Herne has two centres, which matters for the last part of the drive. Since 1975 the city has included Wanne-Eickel, and an address there is a different stop from one in central Herne. Further north, the Rhein-Herne-Kanal runs past Crange, the district that hosts the city's famous fair every August.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. When you book, add the flight number and, for Wanne-Eickel, the district name, since Wanne-Eickel has a centre of its own.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Düsseldorf Airport
More than 60 airlines fly to DUS in summer, the season when the Cranger Kirmes brings visitors to Herne. Whatever the airline, everyone arrives in one terminal with three piers, so the car needs your flight number and not a terminal name.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
For a party flying in for the Kirmes, the advantage of a booked car is the drop-off point. Rather than heading for the fairground with luggage, the car can take you to the hotel first, and you set off for Crange later without your cases. By rail, the driverless SkyTrain would first take you to the station in about seven minutes.

Arriving at Your Address in Herne
With about 156,000 inhabitants on 51 km², Herne ranks among Germany's most crowded cities by population density. Coal shaped it: the Shamrock and Mont Cenis collieries stood here, and the Akademie Mont-Cenis now occupies the former mine site. The LWL-Museum für Archäologie, run by the Westphalia-Lippe regional association, is also in the city, and Evonik is among today's employers.
Crange is 5 km from the centre and quiet for most of the year, but in August it hosts the largest folk festival in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city's Intercity station is Herne-Wanne-Eickel, which Deutsche Bahn lists as Wanne-Eickel Hbf.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For an address in Wanne-Eickel, name the district as well as the street.

From Herne Back to Düsseldorf Airport
For the return, think in drive time: 45 minutes to 1 hour from central Herne to the terminal, with the upper figure when the A40 is busy. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
The airport end is simple, as DUS has a single terminal for all departures.
The Kirmes changes the city side. Over the eleven days in August, around four million people come to Crange, and the roads in the north of Herne fill up, especially in the evenings and at weekends. The fairground, with about 50 rides on roughly 110,000 m², lies next to the canal. If you fly out during the fair, leave a wider margin when you are collected north of the centre, and choose a hotel address rather than the fairground as the starting point.
