Düsseldorf Airport to Gelsenkirchen: Route and Drive Time
Gelsenkirchen lies north-east of the airport, in the heart of the Ruhr. The trip is 40 km and normally takes 40–55 minutes: the A52 heads east from the terminal and the A40 carries you through the conurbation to the city.
On a match or concert day, the address decides more than the motorway. The Veltins-Arena is not in the centre but on the Berger Feld in Erle, in the north of the city, and the drive from the terminal to the stadium is 55 km, 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes on a normal day, 15 km further than the centre. With tens of thousands of people heading the same way before kick-off, that figure can grow.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. When you book, give the flight number and say whether you are going to a hotel, to an office or straight to the stadium.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Düsseldorf Airport
DUS gets by with one passenger building split into three piers, and every arrival comes out there. A fan flying in for a Saturday match and a manager arriving for a meeting in Gelsenkirchen use the same exit, so the booking needs no terminal. In summer more than 60 airlines serve over 160 destinations from this one building.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
Read the airport name on the ticket carefully. Weeze, on the Lower Rhine close to the Dutch border, is a different airport, 85 km from the city rather than 40. If your ticket says Weeze, book the transfer from Weeze.

Arriving at Your Address in Gelsenkirchen
The Veltins-Arena, home of FC Schalke 04, holds 62,271 spectators for Bundesliga matches and up to 70,000 for concerts. With a retractable roof and a pitch that can be moved out of the stadium, the venue hosts shows as well as football. Motorway exits on the A2 and the A42 lead to it, and from the Hauptbahnhof it is 8 km, 20–25 minutes.
The rest of the city has other addresses: the Musiktheater im Revier for opera and ballet, the ZOOM Erlebniswelt zoo, the Nordsternpark on a former colliery site, and the BP refinery in Scholven for business visitors.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For the stadium, name the gate or the car park on your ticket, because the arena grounds are large and the approach roads are busy on event days.

From Gelsenkirchen Back to Düsseldorf Airport
The ride to the terminal takes 40–55 minutes from the city centre. Plan it by that length, not by the clock, and add time if you leave from Erle. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
At DUS every departure uses the single terminal, so your flight number is all the chauffeur needs at that end.
The real planning happens around the stadium. When up to 70,000 people leave the Berger Feld after a concert, the roads around the arena fill at once, so a flight late the same night leaves little room. Tram 302 links the lower level of the Hauptbahnhof with the arena in about 15 minutes, and extra trams are added on event days; parking near the arena is limited. If you can, fly home the next morning and set the pickup at your hotel rather than at the stadium.
