Düsseldorf Airport to Aachen: Route and Drive Time
Aachen lies on Germany's western edge, south-west of the airport, where the country meets the Netherlands and Belgium. The drive is 93 km and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes: the route crosses the Rhine and runs west mostly on the A44, with short stretches of the A46 and A57, before the A544 brings you into the city.
The end of the trip depends on the part of Aachen you need. RWTH Aachen reaches well beyond the centre, as far as the Hörn and Campus Melaten in the west, the Soers with the CHIO grounds lies north of the centre, and the old town around the cathedral sits inside a low-emission zone.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. With the booking, send the flight number and the full address, with the institute or building for RWTH.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Düsseldorf Airport
Aachen has a nearer airport, but for scheduled and long-haul flights DUS is often the better fit. All its passenger flights are handled in one terminal with three piers, so you leave through the same building whatever your airline.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. A driverless shuttle, the SkyTrain, takes rail passengers from the terminal to the airport station in about seven minutes; a car starts at the terminal.
Check the airport name on your ticket. Maastricht Aachen Airport carries the city's name but is a different airport, across the border in the Netherlands. If your ticket shows MST rather than DUS, the transfer is booked from there.

Arriving at Your Address in Aachen
Charlemagne's cathedral and the medieval town hall stand at the heart of Aachen, and more than 50,000 students live in the city. As one of Europe's largest technical universities, RWTH stretches across the Hörn to Campus Melaten, a site shared by research institutes and companies.
Since 2016 the area inside the outer ring road has been a low-emission zone, open only to cars with a green sticker, and the squares around the cathedral are busy on market days. If your hotel is in the old town, send the full address with the booking and we will tell you how close the car can go.
For Campus Melaten or an institute at the Hörn, the building or institute name is the useful detail, as the campus is spread out. Congresses are held at the Eurogress in the Kurpark, on Monheimsallee, so name the hall or entrance when you book.

From Aachen Back to Düsseldorf Airport
For the way back, plan with the length of the drive: 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes from Aachen to the terminal, more when the A44 is busy. This is the longest of the city routes around DUS, so the margin matters. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it.
At DUS, every departure uses the one terminal, and the car needs nothing more than your flight number.
On the city side, the Christmas market and CHIO week change the picture. In 2026 the market runs from 20 November to 23 December on the squares between the cathedral and the town hall, and a pickup in the old town on those evenings takes longer. During CHIO, give a hotel address rather than the Soers as the starting point; bus 51 and a shuttle run between the Hauptbahnhof and the Soers on event days.
