Dortmund Airport to Herne: Route and Drive Time
Herne lies north-west of the airport, between Bochum and Recklinghausen, so the car crosses Dortmund to get there. The road distance is 37 km on the B1, the A40 and the A42, usually 40–55 minutes. Traffic on the B1 through Dortmund and at the motorway junctions decides where in that range a trip ends.
Herne is really two towns in one. Since 1975 it has included Wanne-Eickel, and the two centres have kept their own streets, stations and shops. An address in Wanne-Eickel and one near Herne's town hall are separate destinations, so the district name belongs in the booking. In the north, the Rhein-Herne-Kanal runs past Crange, home of the Cranger Kirmes.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. Add your flight number and the full address, with the district, when you book.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Dortmund Airport
DTM handles all its flights in a single passenger terminal, so the booking has no terminal field to worry about. The airport is at its busiest in high summer: August 2025 was its record month, with 337,628 passengers, the same month in which Herne holds its fair.
When you land, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
In August the summer crowds in the terminal can mean a longer wait at baggage reclaim, and the roads towards Herne carry fair traffic. Because the car is tied to the actual landing rather than the timetable, a slow luggage belt does not cost you your ride; it only moves the start of the drive.

Arriving at Your Address in Herne
With about 156,000 people on 51 km², Herne is one of the most densely built-up cities in Germany. Its past is coal: two collieries, Shamrock and Mont Cenis, made the town what it is, and on the former Mont Cenis grounds the Akademie Mont-Cenis now hosts training courses and conferences under a large glass roof. The LWL-Museum für Archäologie, the regional archaeology museum for Westphalia, is in the centre, and the chemical group Evonik is among the employers.
Crange, in the north by the canal, is a quiet district most of the year. During the Cranger Kirmes it becomes one of the busiest places in the region, and the streets around the fairground fill up.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. In Kirmes week, name the side of the fairground you are heading for.

From Herne Back to Dortmund Airport
For the return, plan by the length of the journey: from the centre of Herne to the terminal it is 40–55 minutes, a little more from Wanne-Eickel in the evening rush on the A42. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it. At DTM all departures leave from the one terminal, so the car takes you to the same entrance whatever the airline. In Herne, the eleven days of the Kirmes, which start on the Thursday before the first Friday in August, change the picture: the fair covers roughly 110,000 m² by the Rhein-Herne-Kanal, with around four million visitors, and the area around Crange is slow at any hour. If you are staying near the fairground, a pickup from a street on the far side of the town centre can save time; give that address when you book.
