Dortmund Airport to Gelsenkirchen: Route and Drive Time
Gelsenkirchen lies due west of the airport, on the far side of Dortmund and Bochum. The road runs 44 km along the B1 and the A40, the Ruhrschnellweg, and the drive usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. On the A40, the morning and evening queues set the length of the trip more than the kilometres do.
The city is large and spread out, so the last part depends on where you are going. The Veltins-Arena stands on the Berger Feld in Erle, in the north, with its own motorway exits on the A2 and the A42; the Musiktheater im Revier is in the centre, and the ZOOM Erlebniswelt zoo lies between the two. A hotel near the Hauptbahnhof is a different target again.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. For a match or a concert, add the event and the gate to the booking, not only the hotel.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Dortmund Airport
DTM is a compact airport with one passenger terminal, so the booking has no terminal to fill in and every flight ends in the same building. Wizz Air, Eurowings and the holiday carriers all share it. The chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. By public transport, Gelsenkirchen from DTM means the bus to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof or the shuttle to Holzwickede station, a train west and then a tram or bus to Erle, three vehicles with luggage. The car goes from the terminal to the address in one run, which counts most on a match day, when trains towards the arena are full long before kick-off.

Arriving at Your Address in Gelsenkirchen
Outside the Ruhr, Gelsenkirchen is known mainly for one building. The Veltins-Arena, home of FC Schalke 04, holds 62,271 spectators for Bundesliga matches and up to 70,000 for concerts; its roof closes and its pitch slides out, so it hosts shows as well as football. The arena is about 8 km from the Hauptbahnhof, 20–25 minutes by car on an ordinary day.
The city has other addresses worth naming in a booking. The Musiktheater im Revier stages opera and ballet in the centre, ZOOM Erlebniswelt is a large zoo, and the Nordsternpark occupies a former colliery site. In Scholven, BP runs a refinery, which brings engineers and contractors to town.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. On event days, name the gate or car park at the arena.

From Gelsenkirchen Back to Dortmund Airport
For the return, plan with the drive: 45 minutes to 1 hour from Gelsenkirchen to the terminal, more on weekday evenings, when the A40 through Bochum and Dortmund slows down. You set the pickup time yourself, and the confirmation shows it. At DTM, all departures leave from the single terminal, and the car takes you to its entrance. On the Gelsenkirchen side, the crowds after a match or a concert are the main factor: up to 70,000 people leave the Berger Feld at once, and the roads around Erle are slow for a good while afterwards. Parking near the arena is limited, which is one more reason to name a pickup point you can reach on foot. If you fly home the night of a match, a pickup a short walk away from the arena, rather than at the stadium car park, gets you onto the motorway sooner.
