Airport Transfers from Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG) to Obertauern

One-Way Transfer
A one-way transfer covers one journey between two addresses: the terminal to a hotel on the Untertauern side of the pass, Salzburg Airport to a chalet near the top at 1,738 m, or Obertauern down to Radstadt station for a train. For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. For a departure, the pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
Round-Trip Service
Round-Trip Service books both directions in one reservation: Salzburg Airport to the top of the Radstädter Tauern on arrival day, and down again to the terminal for the flight home. Most Obertauern guests travel on a winter Saturday, together with the airport's charter peak, and Christmas and New Year fill just as fast, so book the descent with the climb. You choose both pickup times, and both appear in your booking confirmation.
Hourly Service
Hourly service keeps one chauffeur and one vehicle with you for a set number of hours. When you book, you set the start at SZG, the final address and the hours you need, and you add the day's plan to the reservation so the chauffeur has it before your flight lands. It suits an arrival day with appointments, not a straight run to one hotel.

Salzburg Airport to Obertauern: Route and Drive Time

Obertauern is 90 km from Salzburg Airport, and the drive falls into two clear parts. The first is the A10 Tauern motorway south as far as the Radstadt exit, fast and without surprises. The second is the B99, which leaves the valley at Radstadt, passes Untertauern and climbs the northern side of the Radstädter Tauern Pass for about 20 km to the village at 1,738 m. The whole trip usually takes 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes.

Time on the motorway hardly varies; the pass road decides the arrival time. It is cleared all winter, but after fresh snow the climb is slower, and in heavy snowfall chains can be required.

Journey times vary with traffic and weather. Nothing on this route crosses a border: from the terminal to the top of the pass the car stays in Austria.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Salzburg Airport

Salzburg Airport is starting the largest building project in its recent history. Since September 2026 old buildings have been coming down, and over the next years the two terminals will grow into a single one. For a skier landing now, none of that moves the pickup: arrivals from both terminals still come through one hall and leave by a single exit.

Obertauern guests are part of the reason the airport runs a second terminal. Families, ski clubs and conference delegations bound for the pass arrive on winter Saturdays, often booked months in advance, and the Amadeus Terminal 2 opens for that charter peak.

For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. If a late flight means climbing the pass after dark, the drive simply starts from the actual landing.

Arriving at Your Hotel in Obertauern

Everything in Obertauern stands along one road, the B99, around the top of the pass. Administratively there is no Obertauern municipality: the northern part belongs to Untertauern and the southern part to Tweng, and the boundary runs over the pass itself. Coming up from Salzburg, the Untertauern side is reached first, and a hotel on the Tweng side lies a little further along the same road.

That split sometimes shows in an address, which may name Untertauern or Tweng rather than Obertauern. Give the full address from your booking confirmation, including the hotel name, so the car goes to the right side of the pass.

Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For onward rail travel the closest station is Radstadt, at the foot of the northern climb.

From Obertauern Back to Salzburg Airport

Leaving Obertauern, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes to Salzburg Airport, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.

The return starts with the descent on the B99 to Radstadt, the part most affected by snow; after that the A10 runs north to Salzburg. On winter Saturdays the road down carries nearly every departing guest at once. Between 1 November and 15 April Austrian law requires winter tyres whenever conditions are wintry, and buses run on them all season whatever the weather.

On winter Saturdays part of the charter traffic departs from the Amadeus Terminal 2, where skis and boards are checked in separately. Tell us the terminal shown on your booking, and the car goes straight to that building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your airport transfer with Bookinglane.

How long does the transfer from Salzburg Airport to Obertauern take?

The route is 90 km: the A10 south to the Radstadt exit, then about 20 km up the B99 past Untertauern to 1,738 m. The drive usually takes 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and fresh snow on the pass road pushes it towards the upper end.

Is the pass road to Obertauern open in winter?

Yes. The B99 is cleared all winter and is the only road to the village from either side. When heavy snow falls, a chain requirement may apply on the ascent, which is the main reason a winter arrival takes longer than the motorway distance suggests.

What happens if my flight to Salzburg is late?

The pickup moves with it: the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time.

Our charter lands at Terminal 2. Where do we meet the chauffeur?

In the same place as for Terminal 1. The Amadeus Terminal 2 opens for winter Saturday charters, but passengers from either terminal come out through the same hall and door, whichever building the aircraft uses.

Would Klagenfurt be a better airport for Obertauern?

Usually not. Klagenfurt is 140 km from Obertauern, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes, up the southern side of the pass through Mauterndorf, while Salzburg is 90 km. Klagenfurt is worth considering if you have a flight into Carinthia or are spending part of the trip there.

What do you need to know about Salzburg Airport in 2026 and 2027?

The terminal renewal is moving from planning to building. Since September 2026 demolition has been clearing the ground, and in 2027 the main construction begins; the full programme lasts until 2033. The arrivals hall and its exit remain in use as they are, so nothing changes for an Obertauern pickup at present.
