Salzburg Airport to Kaprun: Route and Drive Time
Kaprun is 98 km from Salzburg Airport. The usual way is the A10 Tauern motorway south, then the B311 up the Salzach valley towards Bruck; the alternative runs west through the Bavarian corner at Bad Reichenhall to Lofer and down past Saalfelden. Near Bruck the B168 branches off into Kaprun, about 8 km beyond Zell am See. The whole drive usually takes 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours.
Kaprun has two arrival points, and the booking should name the right one. The village lies at 786 m, at the mouth of its valley; the glacier lifts of the Kitzsteinhorn are another 9 km up the valley road. A hotel at the glacier base adds that stretch to the figures above.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. On winter Saturdays the whole Kaprun valley swaps guests on the one approach road, and arrivals drift towards the longer figure.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Salzburg Airport
A family bound for the Kitzsteinhorn rarely travels light. Boots, skis and helmets for everyone come off the belt after the suitcases, and the trolley that leaves the hall is fuller than the headcount suggests. Salzburg is used to it: the Amadeus Terminal 2, opened on winter Saturdays for the charter traffic, has its own check-in for ski equipment, and both terminals send arriving passengers through one hall and one exit.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.
Tell us about the equipment when you book, not at the kerb: four skiers with full kit need more room than four passengers with cases, and the vehicle is chosen for the load before you land.

Arriving at Your Hotel in Kaprun
Most hotels are in the village itself, which has been linked directly to the glacier since 2019: the 3K K-onnection runs from the centre over the Maiskogel to the Kitzsteinhorn, so many guests step onto a lift near their hotel and leave the valley road alone. Others stay at the glacier base, 9 km up the valley, where the ski day starts at the door.
Those two addresses are different journeys, so name the hotel, not just Kaprun. If you arrive by rail instead, note that mainline trains end in Zell am See; the station in Fürth-Kaprun is on the narrow-gauge Pinzgauer Lokalbahn.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For a family with a lot of equipment, a hotel entrance with a luggage room or ski depot is worth mentioning.

From Kaprun Back to Salzburg Airport
Leaving Kaprun, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours to Salzburg Airport, longer in heavy traffic. From a hotel at the glacier base, add the 9 km down the valley. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
In winter there is only one way out of the Kaprun area: with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road shut for the season, roughly from early November until early May, the return runs along the Salzach valley. Between 1 November and 15 April Austrian law requires winter tyres whenever conditions are wintry, and buses run on them all season whatever the weather.
On winter Saturdays some charters depart from the Amadeus Terminal 2, whose check-in takes ski equipment. Name the terminal on your ticket, and that is where the car pulls up.
