Airport Transfers from Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) to Obertauern

One-Way Transfer
A one-way transfer covers one journey between two addresses: KLU to a hotel in Obertauern, the village down to Mauterndorf in the Lungau, or the pass back to Klagenfurt Airport after the last day on the slopes. For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. For a departure, the pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
Round-Trip Service
Round-Trip Service books both directions in one reservation: on arrival, KLU to your hotel at the top of the pass; at the end of the week, the southern side back down to the terminal. Winter Saturdays, when the resort changes over, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year are the dates on which the journey home should be fixed together with the journey up. You choose both pickup times, and both appear in your booking confirmation.
Hourly Service
Hourly service keeps one chauffeur and one vehicle with you for a set number of hours. When you book, you set the start at KLU, the final address and the hours you need, and you add the day's plan to the reservation so the chauffeur has it before your flight lands. It suits an arrival day with appointments, not a straight run to one hotel.

Klagenfurt Airport to Obertauern: Route and Drive Time

From Klagenfurt Airport to Obertauern is 140 km, which normally means 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes on the road. The car heads west on the A2 past the Wörthersee to Villach, where the A10 Tauern motorway turns north towards Katschberg and the Lungau. It leaves the motorway at St. Michael, and the last 30 km run through Mauterndorf and Tweng up the southern side of the Radstädter Tauern Pass to the village at 1,738 m.

Salzburg, 90 km away, is the nearer airport, and most guests arrive there and climb the northern side from Radstadt. KLU is the airport for the southern approach: when your flight suits, for example a connection through Vienna, or when the week in the snow follows a stay in Carinthia.

Journey times vary with traffic and weather. The motorway rarely decides the arrival; in fresh snow the climb from Mauterndorf does.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Klagenfurt Airport

A ski party landing at KLU has only one way out of the building. The airport has one terminal for all its flights; arrivals and the exit are close together, and every passenger uses the same door, skis, boot bags and family included.

For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. On a winter evening that matters twice: a late landing moves the pickup, and the climb over the pass then starts from the real time, not the scheduled one.

The airport has its own A2 junction close to the terminal, so the car is heading west on the motorway within minutes, with Klagenfurt left to one side.

Arriving at Your Hotel in Obertauern

From the south the last stretch is the B99 from Mauterndorf through Tweng, and the resort begins where the climb ends. Obertauern has grown up around the crossing point of the pass, so hotels, lifts and restaurants line the same road, and coming this way the southern end of the village, which belongs to Tweng, is reached before the part on the Untertauern side. There is no railway up here; the road is the only way in.

A chalet or an apartment is harder to find than a hotel on the main road. Add the name of the house and, if the owner has told you which access road to use, that as well.

Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up.

From Obertauern Back to Klagenfurt Airport

Leaving Obertauern, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes to Klagenfurt Airport, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.

The first part is the descent through Tweng and Mauterndorf to St. Michael. The pass road is kept open through the winter; when heavy snow falls, chains may be made compulsory on both approaches. Between 1 November and 15 April Austrian law requires winter tyres whenever conditions are wintry, and buses run on them all season whatever the weather.

On a winter Saturday the resort empties and fills at once, with departures from every hotel on the same morning. With the return booked at the start of the week, your car is already held for that day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your airport transfer with Bookinglane.

How long is the transfer from Klagenfurt Airport to Obertauern?

Obertauern is 140 km away, usually 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes. The route runs on the A2 to Villach and the A10 north to St. Michael, then through Mauterndorf and Tweng up the southern side of the pass.

Why fly into Klagenfurt rather than Salzburg for Obertauern?

Salzburg is nearer, 90 km against 140 km, and most guests use it. Klagenfurt is worth it when your flight suits, for example with a connection through Vienna, or when you are already in Carinthia. From KLU the car climbs the southern side through Mauterndorf instead of the northern side from Radstadt.

What happens if my flight to Klagenfurt is late?

The pickup moves with it: the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time.

Is the road over the pass open in winter?

Yes, the pass road is kept open all season. When heavy snow falls, chains may become compulsory on both sides, and in fresh snow the last kilometres from Mauterndorf set the arrival time more than the motorway does.

We have skis and boards and arrive on different flights. How do we book?

Book each arrival as its own transfer and tell us, for each flight, how many skis, boards, boot bags and cases are travelling. A family of four with ski bags needs more room than four people with cabin cases, and the vehicle is matched to the load.

What do you need to know about Klagenfurt Airport in 2026–2027?

KLU is building on its site: the departure hall is being adapted for events, and among other plans a second hangar should follow from autumn 2026. For a ski arrival nothing changes, since arrivals remain one small terminal with a single exit.
