Bilbao Airport to Bilbao: Route and Drive Time
Bilbao Airport stands at Loiu, 10 km to the north of central Bilbao. Leaving the terminal, the car takes the N-637 along the Txorierri valley and enters the city through the Artxanda tunnels, which the provincial road authority built to link central Bilbao with that corridor. The drive usually takes 15–25 minutes.
With so few kilometres, the hour of the day matters more than the road. Most of the spread comes from the morning and evening peaks at the tunnel approaches and from the city streets between the tunnel exit and your hotel. A hotel in the centre is the short case; the BEC exhibition centre in Barakaldo lies downriver, about 10 km further than the centre.
Journey times vary with traffic and weather. Give the full street address together with your flight number, not only the district, since the last few streets decide where the car sets you down.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Bilbao Airport
All flights at Bilbao use a single terminal, designed by Santiago Calatrava and known locally as La Paloma. The building has three floors. Aena runs two baggage reclaim halls in it, one for flights from the European Union and one for the rest, and both lead into the same enclosed arrivals hall.
For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules. On a drive of a quarter of an hour, that is what keeps a tight schedule intact: a morning flight that lands late still leaves the car ready for the first meeting in Abando.
Aena plans to extend the terminal with more jet-bridge stands and a larger central processor, within its 2027–2031 investment cycle. No start on site has been announced, and in 2026 and 2027 arrivals keep the same single hall.

Arriving at Your Address in Bilbao
Bilbao's low-emission zone is small: about 2 km² of Abando and Indautxu, between the estuary and a ring of main streets, in force Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00, with cameras reading number plates at the accesses. Many business hotels, Abando station on Plaza Circular and the Abandoibarra promenade with the Guggenheim and the Euskalduna are in or next to it.
The Casco Viejo, the old town on the other bank, works differently. The city council runs it as a pedestrian-priority area with number-plate readers, where general traffic may not drive, pull up or park; the Plaza Nueva sits at its heart. For a hotel or a dinner in the old town, we will tell you the nearest point the car can reach, which may be at the edge of the pedestrian streets.
Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. The same goes for the pickup when you leave.

From Bilbao Back to Bilbao Airport
Leaving Bilbao, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 15–25 minutes from a central hotel to Loiu, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
Every airline uses the single terminal at Loiu, and the set-down at departures is the same whatever the flight. From the BEC in Barakaldo, at the end of a fair day, allow for the extra 10 km or so across the city when you choose the time.
Some visitors come to Bilbao by sea and leave by air. Cruise ships berth at the terminals in Getxo, 15 km from the airport and usually 20–30 minutes by car, so the quay can be booked as the pickup for a flight home on the day of disembarkation. Give the ship's name with the booking.
