Airport Transfers from Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG) to Zell am See

One-Way Transfer
A one-way transfer covers one journey between two addresses: the terminal to a hotel on the old-town peninsula, Salzburg Airport to an apartment in Schüttdorf, or the Ferry Porsche Congress Center back to the airport after the final day. For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. For a departure, the pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.
Round-Trip Service
Round-Trip Service books both directions in one reservation: Salzburg Airport to your hotel by the lake on arrival day, and the lake back to the airport once the holiday is over. In winter the pressure is on Saturdays and over Christmas and New Year, when departures from the whole Pinzgau use the B311 together, so fix the second leg at the same time as the first. You choose both pickup times, and both appear in your booking confirmation.
Hourly Service
Hourly service keeps one chauffeur and one vehicle with you for a set number of hours. When you book, you set the start at SZG, the final address and the hours you need, and you add the day's plan to the reservation so the chauffeur has it before your flight lands. It suits an arrival day with appointments, not a straight run to one hotel.

Salzburg Airport to Zell am See: Route and Drive Time

Zell am See is 90 km from Salzburg Airport, and there are two ways to get there. One follows the A10 Tauern motorway south and then turns west up the Salzach valley on the B311. The other heads west from the start, crosses the corner of Bavaria at Bad Reichenhall to Lofer and comes down through Saalfelden, also on the B311. Either way the drive usually takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes.

Both routes finish on the same valley road into town, and that is where the time goes on a winter Saturday. On the western route, everyone needs the documents their nationality and itinerary require: Germany runs temporary checks at its internal borders until 15 March 2027.

Journey times vary with traffic and weather. Say which side of the lake you are staying on. The old town and Schüttdorf are on the western shore, while Thumersbach, across the water, is reached by the road that goes round the lake.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Salzburg Airport

Zell am See has two seasons, and the arrivals hall at Salzburg sees both. In summer, teams heading to the lake for IRONMAN 70.3 or the Spartan Race come through with bike boxes; in winter, families come off the Saturday charters with ski bags. Whether the aircraft uses Terminal 1 or the Amadeus Terminal 2, which opens for that charter peak, everyone leaves through one shared arrivals hall and its single exit.

On a winter Saturday morning much of the airport's group traffic sets off for the Pinzgau at the same hour. For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time. Your booking confirmation tells you where to meet, and the exact spot follows the airport's own pickup rules.

Mention bike boxes, board bags and other outsized items when you book. They decide the vehicle before you reach the kerb.

Arriving at Your Hotel in Zell am See

The old town stands on a peninsula on the western shore of Lake Zell, with the Schmittenhöhe cable car starting just above it. Its centre is a pedestrian zone, and the Ferry Porsche Congress Center sits beside it, about 550 m from the station. A hotel inside the zone cannot always be reached at its front door.

Outside the centre the town spreads out. Schüttdorf runs south along the valley, and Thumersbach lies on the opposite shore, where the only road follows the lake. An address that simply says Zell am See can therefore be ten minutes' walk from the congress centre or on the other side of the water.

Give the exact address when you book, and your confirmation shows where the car will pull up. For a stay in Kaprun, 8 km further on, book to the Kaprun address rather than to Zell am See.

From Zell am See Back to Salzburg Airport

Leaving Zell am See, the useful thing to know is how long the road takes, not when to leave: 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes to Salzburg Airport, longer in heavy traffic. The pickup time you choose is confirmed with the reservation.

On winter Saturdays the B311 carries the departures from the whole Pinzgau, and the trip back sits at the upper end of that range. The southern way out over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road closes every winter, so in season all returns go north or east. Between 1 November and 15 April Austrian law requires winter tyres whenever conditions are wintry, and buses run on them all season whatever the weather.

Give the terminal your airline uses; on winter Saturdays some charters leave from the Amadeus Terminal 2, where ski equipment has its own check-in. A final night in the city of Salzburg, 5 km from the airport, is booked as a separate transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your airport transfer with Bookinglane.

How long does the transfer from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See take?

The distance is 90 km, and the drive usually takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes, either on the A10 and the B311 up the Salzach valley or via Lofer and Saalfelden. Winter Saturdays, when the whole Pinzgau changes guests, sit at the upper end.

Does the transfer cross into Germany?

It can. The western route via Lofer passes Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria, while the A10 route stays in Austria. Because Germany runs temporary checks at its internal borders until 15 March 2027, everyone travelling should carry the documents their nationality and itinerary require, whichever road is used.

What happens if my flight to Salzburg is late?

The pickup moves with it: the chauffeur tracks your flight and plans the pickup around the real landing time.

Our hotel is in the pedestrian zone of the old town. Where does the car stop?

That depends on the street. Much of central Zell am See is pedestrianised, and not every hotel there can be reached at its entrance. Send the full address with the booking, and we will tell you the nearest point the car can reach.

We are bringing bike boxes for a race. Will they fit?

Tell us how many when you book. Bike boxes take more room than suitcases, so the number of boxes, bags and passengers together decides between a car, a Sprinter van or a coach, and the vehicle is matched to the load.

What do you need to know about Salzburg Airport for 2026–2027?

A long rebuild of the terminals has started. After preparatory work, demolition has been under way since September 2026, and the main construction follows from 2027, with the new departures area due in 2030. Passengers arriving now still use the one shared arrivals hall and exit of Terminal 1 and the Amadeus Terminal 2.
